 published African-American poet and the first African-American female publ
 ished writer. Phillis Wheatley’s life began in West Africa. Taken from 
 her home on a slave ship when she was only 7, she was bought by the afflue
 nt and well-connected Wheatley family of Boston.Forbidden from associating
  with other slaves, Phillis was between two worlds, belonging to neither.
  Through the Wheatley&#039;s she had met Benjamin Franklin, attended balls
 , written and published poetry. Yet, she was excluded from Mr. Wheatley&#0
 39;s will and died in poverty. Join us to learn about this talented poet 
 and fascinating woman!
